The Magpie's Hoard The weblog formerly known as "Words & Pictures".
This website is a diary of all the wildlife (animals, plants and fungi)that I encounter on my hill-walking trips in Scotland.
Most of my wanderings are in the Kilpatrick Hills, just North of Glasgow - an area with very little official protection from developers.
I aim to document/photograph the diverse range of species found in this much neglected area, in the hope that I can provide valuable data for future Clydebelt campaigns.
The Kilpatrick Hills consist mainly of rough grassland and moorland, interspersed with natural & planted deciduous woodland and blocks of forestry commission coniferous forest. There are many lochs scattered throughout these hills.
Species found in this area include:
Mammals - Otter, Brown Hare, Pine Marten (possible sightings), Brown Hare & Water Vole.
Birds - Black Grouse, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Osprey, Goldeneye, Great Crested Grebe, Lapwing, Curlew, Raven, Whinchat, Stonechat, Grasshopper Warbler, Blackcap, Whitethroat, Linnet, Siskin, Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting & Common Crossbill.
Amphibians & reptiles - Adder, Common Lizard, Slowworm, Frog, Toad & Palmate Newt.
Insects - at least 14 species of butterfly and at least 10 species of dragonfly/damselfly.
Observations and ramblings about wildlife in the Sheffield area.
