Just An Amateur--Film Criticism For Those Who Know No Better
Unlike the majority of websites writing on anything, I am writing about things of which I openly admit I have little to no formal knowledge. I am merely keeping a blog to get my thoughts out in the open so they don\'t just sit on my hard drive and rot. I can\'t really say I have a formal philosophy of how to critique film, because I don\'t--I\'m learning as I go, because I\'ve found that the only way I ever learned how to do things was to actually do them. I don\'t even feel very comfortable saying which films or directors are the best in my opinion, because there\'s so much I haven\'t seen yet, although I do have my likes (Hitchcock, Chaplin, Kurosawa) and dislikes (Fellini). Why read this then? Well, as was said in Kurosawa\'s SEVEN SAMURAI, \"Sometimes the greatest friendship comes through a chance meeting.\" That made a lot of sense when I wrote it, but it doesn\'t seem to anymore so you\'ll have to unravel it. You\'ll see all kinds of movie reviews here--short ones and very long ones like the one I\'m now prepacommunity on Chaplin\'s CITY LIGHTS, on old movies, new movies, short movies, long movies, hard-to-find classics, rental store crap; basically whatever I can see. It\'s not a commentary on \"what\'s out in theatres\" or a news site on film. It won\'t be updated regularly at times so don\'t expect it to be. A few quickies about me now that you have the germ of the website: *I go to the University of Notre Dame in Indiana--the one with a golden dome and Charlie Weis. *My day job is being an electrical engineecommunity student and making sure my friends stay out of trouble whilst drinking. (The word \"occasional\" is quite accurate--when I\'m not on break, posting will be slim to none, although I write a lot so you\'ll have plenty to read even then). I want to go to law school after I\'m through at ND. *I\'m from Fresno, CA, a cinematic backwater if ever one existed, and both of my parents are totally uninterested in most of the films I like. One of them is highly skeptical that anything good has come of screens ever. *I\'m a jazz musician (saxophones). *I\'m an orthodox Catholic. *I\'m politically, socially, and culturally conservative (these last two bullets have nasty habits of showing up in my film reviews every once in a while in commentary relating what\'s going on in the movies to \"what\'s wrong with the world\" in my opinion. OK, so it\'s not nasty, but it is there so be forewarned). *I\'ve tried blogs before with little to no success. I\'m just admitting this time that it won\'t be updated regularly and living with it, and it\'s not the kind of thing where people expect a post every day anyway. *I\'m an introvert whom everyone says is an extrovert. *My glasses make me look like Rivers Cuomo, the frontman for the band Weezer
