{;}The life of a soldier, in war and in peace.{;}

Vivian writes about her daily living and reflections as a military spouse. She and her husband, David, a career officer in the United States Army and their two sons live near Fort Bliss, Texas in the West Texas town of El Paso. El Paso is said to have a population of over 600,000. Juarez boasts of over 1,500,000. That’s quite a few folks. But don’t let the numbers fool you. El Paso is all about small town stuff. The advantage of living in a big city like ours includes the arts and culture that are readily available. The national chain restaurants, active night life and shopping are also definitely perks. But even though El Paso is no one traffic light kinda town it’s got a nice small town feel. I grew up in a small town a little East of here and generally speaking, it's provincial, traditional, and above all religious. That might be tough for some. For “us” and I’m generalizing the bulk of the military families it should feel like a nice pair of worn in jeans. Disproportionately our young families come from towns just like mine, small-town America. In our town a call to service makes you a first class citizen. Patriotism runs deep. Small town values make living away from family tough and navigating the highways a bit scary at first. But - You can, if you’re willing, experience a real sense of community here.
