My Political Side
I am a progressive, liberal writer who sees the United States as part of a global community that must strive for equality and a level playing field for all. I write about current events and American history, and I review books and films that have a political component. I am especially interested in the intersection of faith and politics, and in the need for a new Progressive Era. Faith and politics interest me because of the ways in which they create friction. For example, in the ongoing health care reform debate, abortion funding is an issue. Yet, abortion is legal. As for a new Pprogressive Era, without great changes in the way we treat our workers, care for our infrastructure, and modernize our energy delivery, we may quite literally die out as a country. The benefits of progressive change would bring with them such an infusion of creativity, excitement, and renewal--I'd like to communicate that to as many other people as I possibly can. I think that well-written essays with a focused theme and passionate yet factual language can help people see the potential of government-shaking, life-changing policies such as universal health care and paid vacation for everyone in the United States.

mama in macondo is a new blog about life and motherhood. a canadian mama of a toddler monkey and a preschooler monster has packed up shop with her argentinian husband and moved to a jungly beach town in argentina. macondo is a mythical land of magical realism that is part small-town absurdity, part third world tragedy, and also filled with love, humour, community, history and music. macondo mama writes about life, mothering, feminism, activism, immigration, bilingualism, frogs and other things. along with relating local absurdities, she reflects on class issues and local social and political realities. calling herself not an expat mama but an immigrant, she explores how to engage in a society so different than the one in which she grew up; she wonders how to raise feminist little boys in a context of traditional and highly structured gender norms; she writes about breastfeeding, babywearing, co-sleeping, preschool, birthday parties and other delights of parenting. she is searching for an inspiring PhD topic, struggling with all the changes in her life and learning how to be a mom.
