Family From The Fringes
We are an Australian family who do things a little differently to most. We birth our babies at home, breastfeed beyond 12 months, use cloth nappies, wear our kid(s) in slings instead of using a pram, home school and just generally try to raise our child(ren) to be feminist trouble makers bringing down the patriarchy :D Hello! We are a group of Mums with young children who met online in a breastfeeding support forum, hence the “BF Forum” ring. Apart from that we are all different, living in different places with different types of families, loves and lives. We have supported each other through our babies' early days and the challenges and frustrations of learning to live with another small human being and meet the needs of everyone in the family. Many of us are isolated, which is why we turned to a forum for support, and have now taken up blogging to talk to people other than our children! Please come and talk to us back Very Happy Seriously, we are real Mums doing real parenting. We have our good days and bad days and worry about doing the right thing for our kids, just like other Mums.

Before having kids I was a Secondary science and maths teacher. I'm always after fun and interesting things to do with my girls, and feel strongly about science education (obviously!). I also know that small children are natural scientists - they question, test, and try to explain the world areound them all the time. So Science@home is about sharing this with other parents. Each week I have at least one activity as well as lists of ideas to try, web reviews, general science information, beautiful science pictures, and general educational information. All activities are set up so they can be done with all sorts of age groups, from babies through to toddlers, pre-schoolers or primary school kids. I have a weekly newsletter you can sign up for to receive the links plus interesting science facts and access to extra pages, including things like my essential resources to have around the home. From playing with blocks to making a fairy diorama, playing with water or going to the local park, if you are after fun activities you can do with your kids that will get all of you thinking, there is something here for you.

We are doing our best to raise our kids in a way that responds to their needs and respects our environment. We are proud to practice sling wearing, co-sleeping, demand feeding, cloth nappying and elimination communication. This is a blog about our adventures as a family; our passions; and our commitment to becoming more environmentally aware.
