Giant Panda Bears On July 9, 2005 a male giant panda cub Tai Shan was born at the National Zoo in Washington. A female cub, Su Lin, was born on August 2, 2005 at the San Diego Zoo. The first giant panda cub ever to survive in captivity in the U.S. is Hua Mei also born in the San Diego Zoo.
