Britney Spears Toxic: The Music Career of Britney Spears

Doesn’t it seem that young Hollywood starlets like Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan are in the newspapers on a daily basis for their personal exploits rather than their work. Several years ago, Spears famously declared in song that, “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.” However, being divorced twice in a three year span, giving birth to two children, and appearing on newspapers around the world in photos of britney spears no panties have definitely announced that Britney Spears is a woman. Britney Spears Video: Britney On Screen. When Britney Spears first broke through in 1998, the radio airwaves were a different world than it is now. The 1990s had been culturally defined by the grunge scene that developed in Seattle with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden popularizing a hard-hitting sound that emphasized responsibility and self-loathing. By 1998, the radio was full of bands that tried to imitate these grunge sounds to much lesser degrees. That’s why Britney Spears’ first singe, …Baby One More Time was such a big success. With its tasty Swedish production and provocative video, Britney Spears struck a chord with a generation that was tired of being bummed out. Her refined pop sound allowed people to take things less seriously and helped legitimize a burgeoning teen pop sound that was mirroring the harmless fun of 1950s beach movie pop icons. It is not surprising that parents and kids would embrace Britney Spears considering her pedigree. With her background as a child star in the New Mickey Mouse Club, Britney Spears represented a return to innocence to a more Disney version of pop culture. Of course, Britney Spears didn’t just appeal to parents and young kids. The video for …Baby One More Time featured her in a school uniform that was tied up in a provocative fashion. Many people when they saw the seventeen year old starlet developed fantasies of seeing britney spears naked and Spears was able to shrewdly straddle the innocent-sex pot line. Although image is extremely important in a modern music career, Britney had to be able to churn out infectious pop hits that would maintain the growing interest in her. Her debut album, “…Baby One More Time” has been one of the few albums to debut on number one. The album was a massive success and produced big hits like, “Sometimes,” and “Drive Me Crazy.” In addition to these pop hits, Spears was able to further her popularity with her somewhat controversial but generally squeaky clean public image. She would appear looking sultry in magazines like Rolling Stone while also making appearances looking like the All-American good girl in teen magazines. When Britney Spears first came out in 1998, she was following the path of boy bands like Backstreet Boys and N Sync who helped make the world ready for pure pop music. Still, Britney Spears had managed to become the brightest star of these Disney influenced pop acts and many viewed the success of her sophomore album would have a big impact on pop’s artistic legitimacy. On May 16, 2000, Spears unleashed her second album, “Oops! I Did It Again.” The album would break the record for best selling first week for a female artist with 1.3 million units being sold. The album would go on to sell over 10 million records in America alone and firmly established Spears as the queen of teen pop. Spears would also go on to tour the world for the first time and quickly developed a reputation for being a dynamic performer. Major companies like Pepsi sought Spears out to be the main face for their ad campaigns and Britney was becoming a corporation in her own right with various products associated with her becoming major sellers. By the time Britney Spears released her third album, “Britney,” she was in the midst of a fascinating dilemma. Her first two albums had become massive successes and Britney was queen of the teens.

However, the one thing about teen stars is that they eventually grow up and find that the same people that followed them initially will abandon them. With her innocent teen princess image restricting her musical options, Britney Spears would release an album that tried to please everyone. Britney showcased Spears taking her first tentative steps away from the polished synth-pop that had defined her earlier albums. Additionally, Spears was exercising some artistic control by co-writing five of the album’s twelve songs. The albums debut single, “I’m a Slave 4 U” had Spears working with acclaimed hip hop producers, The Neptunes, and showed Spears discussing her sexuality in more detail. Although the album debuted atop the charts, it would sell 5 million copies, which was half the total of the sales of “Oops! I Did It Again.” Britney Spears found that her claim to the pop throne was being challenged after the release of “Britney.” Fellow New Mickey Mouse Club star, Christina Aguilera, had garnered respect for completely abandoning her teen image for a sexed up X-Tina persona and Spears’ ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, had revealed details that completely wrecked Spears’ kid friendly image. With so much drama bubbling in Spears’ life many people anticipated how she was going to address these issues with her fourth album. Released on November 18, 2003, In The Zone showcased an artist that was more concerned with making a fun party album than making angst filled anthems about her personal life. The album’s initial single featured a dream team pairing with Madonna but the defining song would be, Toxic. Toxic was an all around critical and commercial hit. It also helped legitimize Spears as a pop artist with a bright future.

Although In The Zone would be Spears’ biggest critical success, her career has been derailed by her poor personal decisions over the last couple of years. However, although news on Spears have focused on her personal demons, she has also quietly begun work on her fifth album. Considering her impeccable track record that has seen her climb to the eight top selling female artist in music in less than five years, it would be shortsighted to count Britney Spears as important music artist out.
