Age Ain’t Nuthin but a Number, But Looks Still Count: Demi and Kutch

It’s practically a cliché – a man becomes wealthy, reaches new heights of stardom and has essentially conquered his professional world.  The next thing that he has to do is to dominate his personal world and who hasn’t seen an older successful man being flanked by a beautiful, much younger, wife or girlfriend?  Women hate seeing this type of couple and men, well they’re pretty indifferent when it comes to this occurrence.  After all, it so regularly happens that it doesn’t seem particularly extraordinary, particularly in Hollywood where older movie executives and producers are often paired with some of the hottest women in the world, who are often young enough to be their daughter.

This cliché can be found in more mainstream celebrity marriages.  After all, just look at the sixteen-year age difference between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes or the thirty-one year age difference between Billy Joel and Katie Lee.  That is why there is so much public curiosity to the celebrity marriage of Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher.  Much like the Hollywood cliché, there is a fifteen-year gap between these two lovebirds.  However, unlike the Hollywood cliché, it is the woman who is marrying a younger man.

However, before we start going crazy and praising Hollywood for its strong gender equality, we have to look at the facts of the Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher celebrity marriage.  Yes, there is a bit of an age difference between these two stars.  Yes, it is usually rare for an older actress to snare a younger actor, particularly one who is considered to be one of the most attractive actors in Hollywood today.  But no, this isn’t like some celebrity marriages or Hollywood marriages where there is one ugly old man marrying an extremely sexy younger woman.  Let’s face it, Demi Moore is still one of the most attractive actresses in Hollywood and when you look past the issue of age, this marriage makes complete sense.

Both Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are well known for their strong senses of humor and for liking to get away from the draining life of Hollywood.  Also, both Moore and Kutcher grew up in cities that traditionally didn’t produce many movie or television stars.  Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are also two of the most attractive people in the world and let’s face it – attractive people are usually attracted to other attractive people.  It doesn’t hurt that Ashton Kutcher has claimed that his teenaged Hollywood crush was Demi Moore and if anything, he has managed to make a highschool dream come true.

So although most people wonder about the age difference between Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, this celebrity marriage can very well be a sign of things to come.  As today’s femme fatales of the movies grow older, there will be a wide array of emerging, wide eyed male stars who are looking to make those Hollywood fantasies of yore come true.  If anything, the Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher celebrity marriage only proves that while age may matter to some, sexiness matters more to most!

It is a bit debatable about which of the two is actually the bigger celebrity.  While Ashton Kutcher has gained notoriety for his antics on That 70’s Show and Punk’d, his career has lasted for only a few years.  On the other hand, Demi Moore has been invading the dreams of teenaged boys throughout the world for decades.  So before we examine the phenomenon that is Demi and Kutch, we will first take a peek through the Demi Moore Gallery of her life!

More than any other actress in the 1990s, Demi Moore brought sexy back to the movies.  There were images of demi moore nude when she appeared topless on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine and also on Vanity Fair, which she did while was pregnant.  For awhile, Demi Moore was the highest paid actress in Hollywood and she personally broke the $10 million salary mark during this time.  However, this increased attention, her increased family obligations, and the critical and commercial failures of movies in which she starred in led to Moore taking a long hiatus from her career.  Although she still appears in movies occasionally, Demi Moore seems to have found a perfect balance between her personal and professional lives.

Born as Demetria Gene Guynes in a city more known for being the alleged landing sight of UFOs in Roswell, New Mexico, stardom didn’t seem to be in the cards for young Demi Moore.  Born on November 11, 1962 to Virginia Guynes, the early circumstances of her life foreshadowed much of the trouble that Demi Moore would have to endure as a child.  Her biological father, Charles Harmon had ran off from Moore’s mother, breaking a two-month marriage.  During that time, Demi Moore’s mother would meet and marry Danny Guynes.  However, this turbulent marriage would last until 1980, when Guynes would commit suicide.

Demi Moore did not have a happy childhood.  Her parents were alcoholics and often fought each other.  Her stepfather, Danny Guynes was unable to maintain a steady job and for that reason the family moved forty times before settling in Los Angeles in 1976.  Prior to this move, Demi Moore and her family primarily resided in the Pittsburgh suburb of Perropolis.  Two years after she had live in Los Angeles, Demi Moore would follow the advice of her high school friend, Nastassja Kinski and drop out of school to pursue a career in acting.  She was only 16 at the time.  By the time she would make her first appearance in a music video in 1980, Demi Moore would enter her first marriage, with the songwriter Freddy Moore.  This is where she obtained her last name and the couple would stay married for six years.

Although it would take Demi Moore several years to get her first big break, she was able to find work due to her sexy looks.  She often modeled for European photographers and would make her first movie appearance in the drive-in 3-D science fiction epic, Parasite.  However, it was not until her appearance on the daytime soap opera, General Hospital in 1982 and 1983 and her appearance as Michael Caine’s daughter in Blame it on Rio in 1984 that Demi Moore first gained real attention.  Only 22 years old at the time, Demi Moore would soon be swept into a group of young Hollywood stars that would help define 1980s youth culture and become a major celebrity.  She would soon become a member of the Brat Pack.

A play on the term given to the Frank Sinatra led Rat Pack that dominated the entertainment world in the 1950s and 1960s, the Brat Pack were big news in the 1980s.  Moore starred in a couple of classic teen movies from this time including St. Elmo’s Fire and About Last Night.  Although she was engaged with her fellow Brat Packer Emilio Estevez for a short time, Demi Moore would soon enter one of the most famous celebrity marriages of the 1990s, when she married Die Hard star Bruce Willis in 1987.

While there were many skeptics about the Demi Moore and Bruce Willis celebrity marriage, the couple proved the people wrong for a long time.  As her personal life seemed to be at a high point, Demi Moore was able to create a distinguished acting career that left her Brat Pack days firmly in the past.  She gained attention for her strong roles in Ghost, A Few Good Men, and Indecent Proposal.  Due to the success of these movies and her reigning status as America’s favorite sex symbol, Demi Moore became the highest paid actress in Hollywood.

However, after the commercial failures of The Scarlet Letter, The Juror, and G.I. Jane, Demi Moore’s acting career seemed to be in shambles.  Even a movie that prominently promised a demi moore striptease in the movie, Striptease, wasn’t as successful as most people assumed it would be.  Feeling slightly burned out and wanting to retreat from the public eye for a bit, Demi Moore would go on a hiatus.  Her thirteen year marriage to Bruce Willis quietly ended in 2000 and in a lot of ways, people began to forget about Demi Moore.

2003 would prove to be a big year for Demi Moore.  It was the year that she made her much anticipated return to the big screen as the villain in the big budget sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.  Showing that she hadn’t lost anything from her much beloved figure, this was also the year where Demi Moore would date one of the fastest rising actors of this period, a man named Ashton Kutcher.

If Demi Moore had to overcome her history of appearing in teen films in the late 1980s and early 1990s, her husband, Ashton Kutcher is going through this process today.  First gaining attention playing the loveable doofus, Michael Kelso, on That ‘70s Show, Kutcher has had to overcome the public perception of him as a man of comedy.  This reputation hasn’t been helped by the hit television show that he produces and hosts, Punk’d, where he plays elaborate practical jokes on fellow celebrities.  While hilarious, the tone of this show has not helped Kutcher expand his career.  However, with his unconventional career arc and his acute business acumen, it wouldn’t be safe for a person to bet against the man that his friends call, Kutch.

Born on February 7, 1978, Christopher Ashton Kutcher was the son of two factory workers.  He has an older sister and also a fraternal twin, Michael, who unfortunately suffered through a number of medical conditions.  Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which has also produced other stars like Elijah Wood and Ron Livingston, Ashton Kutcher lived a typical outdoorsy Midwestern life.  He worked rugged odd jobs like carpentry, played as a wide receiver on the high school football team, excelled at his studies, and also caught the acting bud by appearing in school plays.

However, his seemingly normal life and his popular persona apparently hid a darker edge.  Moving from Cedar Rapids to Homestead, Iowa, Kutcher would later describe his life at home as stressful.  As his brother continued to suffer from cerebral palsy and his parents’ relationship would disintegrate to the point where they would get divorced, Ashton Kutcher would get into a bit of trouble … trouble with the law.

In his senior year of high school, Ashton Kutcher would cause some mischief with his cousin.  One night, the two would be caught breaking into the school at night.  As punishment, Kutcher was sentenced to three years probation and 180 hours of community service after being convicted of third-degree burglary.  Although this experience led to his losing a number of scholarships, Kuther was still able to attend the University of Iowa where he majored in biochemical engineering.

Although he seemed to be on the fast track to a successful career, Ashton Kutcher harbored a secret ambition of becoming an actor.  He would soon get his big break when a talent scout approached him in a bar to recruit him for the Fresh Faces of Iowa modeling competition.  Showing the tenacity and talent that would characterize his rapid rise to stardom in such a short period of time, Kutcher would win this modeling competition and would embark on a modeling career that would take him to the fashion capitals of Paris and Milan.

While Kutcher had achieved some success by appearing in Calvin Klein advertisements and in a Pizza Hut commercial, he still wanted more.  Later that year, he would land the part of Michael Kelso in a single audition.  The show was an immediate success and despite playing a secondary role, it would be Ashton Kutcher who would emerge as the brightest star in the ensemble comedy.  Kutcher would cement his standing with teenage girls throughout the world by appearing as dimwitted but likeable characters in comedies like “Dude, Where’s My Car?” and “Just Married.”

The three-time Kids Choice Award winner has taken forays in dramatic fare like “The Butterfly Effect,” “Bobby” and “The Guardian” to limited success.  While he hasn’t reached critical success as a dramatic actor, Kutcher has forged a career as a promising television producer and as an investor in popular restaurants like Dolce and Geisha House.  While Ashton Kutcher has had a reputation for being a ladies man due to his forays dating Nelly Furtado, January Jones, Ashley Scott, Monet Mazur, and Brittany Murphy, he has been happily married to Demi Moore since September 24, 2005.

Although many critics wondered how Kutcher would act as a stepfather for three daughters, he has ably fulfilled his duties.  Both Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore are followers of the Jewish mysticism offshoot, Kabbalah.  Their wedding was performed by a rabbi of the California based Kabbalah Centre and was attended by over 100 people.  While many people wonder about how this celebrity marriage is going to last over time, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have shown that this celebrity couple has enough sexiness to overcome any issues of age.
