New countertops can make your kitchen look classier and more stylish. Countertops however, aren’t easy to install, and most people hire contractors to take care of this part of their kitchen remodeling. You can save money on both by shopping for kitchen stuff carefully and by doing all the small kitchen remodeling jobs to save the contractor doing them.
 
For instance, you could paint the kitchen yourself and put in new lights and look for sales on kitchen cabinets, countertops, and appliances. Another important part of kitchen remodeling is timing because you don’t want any delays getting your kitchen appliances or countertops that could set back your kitchen remodeling, especially when you’re paying a contractor to do the work. Also keep in mind that you won’t have your kitchen while your kitchen remodeling is going on. You’ll either have to order a lot of take out or make simple meals that don’t require preparation in any major appliances. If you’re remodeling your whole house and not just your kitchen, you’ll probably have to live elsewhere for the duration of the remodeling. This can be quite inconvenient, but just think of how much you could increase your home value. I was looking to buy a cheap place down town but they don’t exist anymore because all these real estate contractor guys have bought them up. In real estate, they call this house ‘flipping’. If you’re a real estate agent, you know all about it. This sudden trend is largely a result of all the house flipping real estate reality shows on TV where everyday Joe buys a cheap broken down house in a trendy downtown area and hires a contractor to fix it up and do some kitchen remodeling. Then Joe’s home value goes way up and he sells it at a huge profit. This is frustrating to anyone trying to find cheap real estate downtown because home values have all gone way up. And most people can’t flip a house in a couple of months as seen on TV because they don’t have the capitol. However, some people are able to increase their home value by remodeling one part of their house at a time, such as remodeling your kitchen. But don’t get me wrong: contractors, kitchen cabinets, appliances, as well as new countertops, are all very expensive. But kitchen remodeling is a more manageable step than remodeling an entire house all at once just to immediately put it back on the real estate market. So what if you’re lucky enough to find some affordable real estate that needs some fixing up? Where should you look for a contractor and how can you save money on countertops, kitchen cabinets, and appliances? If you already have fairly new appliances that still work, that’s a start, You may as well get the other stuff done first because appliances are less urgent if you already own some. If you decide later that you want to replace your appliances with newer more stylish appliances you can. Appliances usually come in fairly standard sizes, so they won’t be difficult to replace once your kitchen remodeling is done and you’ve had time to save up some more money. If you don’t already have working kitchen appliances, you can keep things cheap by keeping it simple. Maybe you could opt for a fridge that doesn’t have a snow cone machine in the door. As mentioned before, you can save money on kitchen cabinets by buying them premade, or if you hava friend who’s a carpenter you might be able to get a good deal. Better yet, make your kitchen cabinets yourself! In terms of countertop prices, it depends on the type of countertops you buy.
 
Obviously a real marble or granite countertop is going to cost a lot more than a faux finish plastic covered fibreboard countertop. Another countertop option that’s very popular at the moment is polished concrete countertops. If you have a contractor install polished concrete countertops, it will be quite expensive, but if you have any experience mixing, pouring, and setting concrete, you could do it yourself. You would have to design a concrete mix that’s not too course so that you could trim and polish it easily. Then you’d need to make a frame to pour the concrete into – this will form your countertops. You can hire most of the tools and machinery you’ll need to cut and polish your countertops and if you do it right, you could save a lot of cash. You also don’t want to make your kitchen too trendy unless you plan to sell it right away. Otherwise, your countertops and kitchen cabinets might go out of style and you won’t add as much to your home value when you do sell your home.
