Notable Institutions

The United States happens to have the densest network of nanotechnology institutions in the world.  Many of the institutes listed here are from the National Nanotechnology Initiative (www.nano.gov).

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

NASA runs a handful of labs around the country.  Most of their nanotechnology research goes into materials and electronics, though some of it is devoted to biotechnology.  Member institutes are:

  • UC Los Angeles - Institute for Cell Mimetic Space Exploration
  • Texas A&M - Institute for Intelligent Bio-Nanomaterials & Structures for Aerospace Vehicles
  • Princeton - Bio-Inspection, Design and Processing of Multi-functional Nanocomposites
  • Purdue - Institute for Nanoelectronics and Computing

National Science Foundation (NSF)

A large number of other University institutions are listed as NSF members.

  • Cornell - Center for Nanoscale Systems, Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, and Nanobiotechnology, Science and Technology Center
  • Rice - Center for Biological and Environmental Nanotechnology
  • Northwestern - Integrated Nanopatterning and Detection
  • Columbia - Center for Electronic Transport in Molecular Nanostructures
  • Harvard - Nanoscale Systems and their Device Applications
  • UC Los Angeles - Center for Scalable and Integrated Nano-Manufacturing
  • Columbia - Center for Nanostructured Materials
  • Cornell - Cornell Center for Materials Research
  • Johns Hopkins - Materials Research Science and Engineering Center
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Center for Materials Science and Engineering
  • Northwestern - Materials Research Science and Engineering Center
  • Pennsylvania State - Center for Nanoscale Science
  • Princeton - Princeton Center for Complex Materials
  • Stanford - Center on Polymer Interfaces and Macromolecular Assemblies
  • University of Virginia - Center for Nanoscopic Materials Design
