Alkaline Diet

The alkaline diet is a fascinating diet that completely goes against the grain of how many people view nutrition.  Developed by alternative medicine expert, Robert O. Young, the alkaline diet emphasizes the importance of alkaline in our body’s pH level.  Young theorizes that since a person’s pH level generally has an alkaline range of 7.36 to 7.44 that they should eat food that contain some alkaline levels.

The alkaline diet theorizes that many individuals feel unhealthy due to an imbalance in their diet caused by high acidity levels.  The alkaline diet theorizes that nutrients and food such as animal protein, caffeine, sugar, and processed foods are acidic.  Conversely, food that contains high levels of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are high in alkaline materials.  The key in the alkaline diet is to strike a balance between your body’s acidity and alkaline levels.

In order for you to see your body’s pH level, you can see a doctor to check and analyze your blood.  Medical conditions that are caused by having an excessive amount of acidity in your body are: arthritis, chronic fatigue, formation of cysts, headaches, hives, muscle pain, stress, and weak nails.  To make your body feel healthier, the alkaline diet recommends eating food that is made up of 75 to 80 percent of alkaline foods, with the remaining foods being acidic.

Foods that are particularly high in alkaline levels include: wheat grass, broccoli, coconut, grapefruit, pumpkin seed, buckwheat, and goat milk.  When you are on the alkaline diet, it is recommended that you should eat foods that are low in acidity.  Such foods include: soy milk, wild fish, millet, black beans, chickpeas, cantaloupe, brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, mayonnaise, and ketchup.

Also known as the acid-alkaline diet, the alkaline diet has a number of critics who argue that there is not enough of a scientific basis behind the diet’s theories.  However, there are also a large number of people that strongly support the alkaline diet and will argue that this diet has changed their lives around for the better.  If you are ready to make a healthy lifestyle change and find that other diets aren’t working out for you, you may find that the alkaline diet is the perfect way for you to change into a happier and healthier you!
