  • Brazilian culture is unique in its own way

Fifth largest country according to area expanse and sixth highest population in the world, the country of Brazil is well known across the world. Brazil has been a melting pot for the various cultures across the globe like Native Americans, Italian, Arab, Spanish immigrants, Portuguese and Africans. Together these cultures have provided what can now be defined as a multiculturally sensitive and multiethnic society of Brazil.

The Brazilian culture along with major Portuguese influence has also been shaped by the native Indians. Almost 100% of the Brazil population speaks Portuguese. The Brazilian culture is a mixture of different ethnicities and races that give it diversity. Called as the “Land of the Amazon”, this South American country has witnessed the cultural divide since the colonial times. Here cultural and racial division is not dependent only on skin color but also on social class, education and manner of dress.

When we think about Brazilian culture the thought of Carnivals crosses our mind. Carnivals are the celebrations of the spring season dating back to the Roman and Greek times. The samba schools all around the Brazil take part in the parade which is marked with a riot of colors, dazzling costumes, samba songs, huge floats and energetic samba dance.

Brazilian culture is imbued with the fragrance of activities of dance and art. Their folk dances and drama are a rich form of artistic expressions, costumes and music. Catholic churches of Brazil are another sign of the rich cultural heritage. Famous sculptures of Aleijadinho are an art work with religious theme and are famous all over the world. Brazilian artists like Cândido Portinari are famous for their art work showcasing Brazilian themes and colors.

Another main contribution by the rich Brazilian culture is in literature. Plays detailing the events of a colony, poems, and chronicles produced by many colonial writers have contributed a lot to the Brazilian literature.

Mention of Brazilian culture is incomplete without the name of soccer. Called as “Futebol” in Brazil, the nation is widely popular for their splendid achievements in this sport. Rated among the best players of football in the world, the game of soccer is played virtually in every neighborhood of Brazil. Famous Brazilian soccer players like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaka are now household names.

So, Brazilian culture is not just about a single race or culture but is an amalgam of different cultures from all across the world and have given Brazil its unique identity.
