  • The Do-It-Yourself Approach to Home Decorating

Admit it, when it comes to your home there are a million things that you dream of doing but just never seem to get around to or just never seem to be in a place where it’s financially feasible. You’ve probably had the Do-It-Yourself bug once or twice after watching too many hours of the Home and Garden Channel, but then became quickly sidetracked by something that didn’t involve putting on coveralls and taking a hammer in hand. It’s okay, you’re only human. But before you decide to kiss your DYI dreams goodbye, have a read through and see what kinds of things you can do and how much money you can save.

Most people who decide to look into Do-it-Yourself projects are usually motivated by a desire to have beautiful items that are either not easy to find or just downright expensive. The surge of home decorating books and programs that advocate taking things into your own hands these days also have a lot to do with this new turn in decorating. These shows make it look easy and inspire us to think outside the box. This brings me to my first suggestion which is to pick up at DYI magazine or watch a couple of decorating shows that feature home made ideas. If you haven’t got the time to sit around waiting for the right episode to present itself, or just don’t have the patience to sit through hours of Debbie Travis only to find nothing that tickles your fancy, then start checking out websites. A search of Do-it-Yourself projects will lead you to hundreds of options as will checking out a site like Home and Garden. Surfing the web can lead you to some great projects! Try to avoid the urge to milk the local build-it centre to try and make every project you see that you like. That’s actually one of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to these projects is that they get a little too ambitious and run out of steam before seeing their projects to the end. Be selective when choosing what you’re going to get your hands dirty with first and stick to a small project if it’s your first.

When you’re choosing your projects, you need to also think of the budget, because while it may be far cheaper then going out and buying ready-made, it can still work out to be more than your budget depending just how strapped for cash you are, especially if you’re going to need not only the materials but also tools that you don’t already have access to. This leads me to another tip! When you’re looking to do-it-yourself, make sure that you elist every possible resource you have and by this I mean your friends and family! Don’t just use them for cheap labor and help, but get them for their tools and anything else that might be helpful! You never know what your friends have lying around in their basements or tool sheds! Do-it-Yourself is all about being crafty after all.
