Finding The Support You Need Through Support Groups
There is no doubt that the existence of support groups have made
a difference in the way we deal with the issues in our lives. Feeling that we
have a place to turn for advice when we’re out of answers is crucial in terms
of getting through some of life’s surprises, especially the hard ones that make
us feel powerless and alone.
Finding support groups used to be limited to a long and
tedious search through the Yellow Pages or via a visit to the doctor, something
which we are not all comfortable with. While you should never feel ashamed to
ask for help, especially from someone who has devoted their lives to helping
others, it is understandable that some things are more personal in nature than
others which can make it harder to speak to your doctor. This has a lot to do
with why online support groups are growing everyday. By turning to the
internet, we can find answers without having to speak to someone in person if
we don’t wish to.
Finding a support group online is simple. You can do a
search for ‘support groups’ followed by the name of the issue that you’re
looking for help on, such as; addiction, cancer, STDs, abuse, etc. The
resources on just abut every issue imaginable are endless! You can find links
to support groups in your community as well as online. There are also other
options like forums which allow you to anonymously post questions and reap the
feedback of others who have been in your shoes. Most forums also allow you the
option to send a private message to another user should you wish to contact
someone. Some sites also offer access to online counselors and medical
professionals. Online counseling sessions are now possible as well on various
sites. Getting support can come from a group or an individual if that’s what
you’re most comfortable with.
Depending on the type of problem you’re dealing with, you
may eventually decide that you’d benefit from attending a support group
meeting. These are also found online via searches, web rings on the sites run
by specific organizations, example; The Cancer Society or Alcoholics Anonymous.
By physically attending a meeting with a
support group, you are able to see first hand that there are others who are dealing
with the same things you are. You are able to talk about your situation or
simply sit back and listen until you feel comfortable doing more. You are in
face-to-face contact with not only other people who are dealing with the same
issues, but also with professionals who are trained to help you dealwith your feelings and offer solutions or at
the very least direct you to the resources that can help you.
A support group can be a lifesaver for anyone who feels that
they are lost. They offer you knowledge, advice, love and support and are there
to show you that you are definitely not alone and provide you with the hope you
need to see you through your problem.
